Ginger

Ginger is an adult female German Shepherd Labrador mix who wandered onto the porch of her rescuers last summer, about a week after another dog called Boo had shown up. Ginger appeared to have no home, and her rescuers were unable to find her owners. She had obviously had at least one litter of pups and from the way Ginger and Boo behaved when they met it looks very much like Boo was one of Ginger’s pups.

Both Ginger and Boo have been lovingly nursed back to relative health, and have both been neutered, etc. However, there are three other older dogs in their foster home and their integration is not going well. Because everyone works full time, there simply isn’t enough time and bandwidth to keep up with this many dogs. In addition, because of the existing dogs, Ginger and Boo’s foster family is struggling to provide the kind of warmth and shelter for Boo and Ginger that they feel they deserve and would like to provide. To make matters more difficult it’s thought that Ginger may have some cat aggression and there is an older cat in her home.

Ginger

Ginger needs a home where she can sleep indoors, yet have some room to play outdoors. Ginger is a fence climber and so needs to be placed with a relatively tall fence. Ginger appears to have no fear of other dogs and is very self confident with other dogs. Consequently, she should be carefully placed if she is to live with other dogs. She should not be allowed to run free because as an experienced stray she appears to have survival skills (like catching and bringing home wild animals to Boo and the family) that could cause problems if left to roam. Like Boo, Ginger also likes to chase cars.

Ginger is an extraordinarily affectionate dog with humans. Her foster family has been amazed at how quickly she has adopted them and how she effortlessly takes their lead. Although she is very much a country dog she appears to want very much to come inside and hang out with her family. She is still young enough that she plays with Boo (very roughly) and enjoys a regular romp about the forest.

Ginger

Above all other things Ginger loves human companionship. Oddly enough she seems interested in TV and likes to ride in the car. She dislikes being penned.

Her play with other dogs is rough. She does not seem especially playful with people. She just likes to hang out with them.

Ginger should not under any circumstances be placed in a family with a cat. She is unduly interested in the family cat and is an extremely fast and powerful dog. She is a bit stubborn and because she is so fast and powerful. A good match for her would include people who are "good pack leaders," as Cesar Milan might say - people who do not easily surrender to the whims of their dog!

All DogsOnly foster homes work with our rescues to ensure they are crate trained and most are also housetrained. None of the DogsOnly fosters have cats in their homes so we can only make our best guess as to how our rescues would do with cats. We rescue from high kill shelters and once accepted into our program, none of our rescues are euthanized. We provide for all their vet care, socialization and training until an appropriate home can be found.

DogsOnly relies solely on donations and is a 501(c)3 Humane Society. Our mission is to rescue dogs that most other groups are not interested in due to their size, breed, age, health or other various reasons, and to provide education resources for dog owners and those with an interest in the wellbeing of dogs. DogsOnly believes that no dog should be left behind.
