| Cairo was purchased when she was a small puppy to be a plaything and companion to a little girl. At first Cairo was a source of joy and entertainment for the child whose parents were separated, but after the child decided that she wanted to live with the other parent and moved away Cairo was left behind. Most people unaccustomed to raising a small puppy don’t at first realize that they will have to deal with crying, the challenge of house training, feeding, constant demands for attention, and the significant expense of food and medical needs. In short, raising a puppy can often be a different kind of hell. Cairo was now in a home where her presence was unwelcome, and she was given no attention and little basic care. Without regular potty breaks, Cairo was soon in even deeper trouble, and was banned to the outside, where she was incarcerated in a 6 foot by 6 foot wooden box. There was no cover on the box to shade the blazing Arkansas sun or rain. Food was simply tossed into the box, and only when her water was green or completely evaporated was any fresh provided.
Unbelievably, Cairo managed to survive almost a year in these squalid and lonely conditions. We don’t know how the local Sheriff came to discover Cairo in that box, but when he did, she was rescued and taken to the local animal shelter. Most canine companions never make it out of small municipal animal shelters and Cairo’s fate looked grim. Even so, she was at least able to enjoy occasional human companionship, was provided with good food and clean water, and was finally out of the hot baking sun.

Fortunately for Cairo, a retired couple from a near-by community heard of her plight and rescued her just in the nick of time. They took Cairo home where she was loved, cared for, and nursed back from the trauma and despair of her terrible ordeal. Thanks to the patience and care of her rescuers, Cairo is now a happy Gilmore. She is described as very smart, very loving, and a quick learner. Cairo is a young female Basset Hound who is looking for a home where she can go for walks with her guardian, and perhaps enjoy the company of other dogs and older children. She is probably too active for younger smaller children, and could possibly knock them over when playing.
Cairo is an independent rescue supported by DogsOnly, and so will not be attending the DogsOnly adoption showings at Petco in west Little Rock, but if you would like to learn more or even meet her you can send an email to her rescuers, Bob and Ursula, at bgorden@ritternet.com. You can also complete an online adoption application by clicking the links at the top or bottom of this page or send an email to contact@dogsonly.org. You application or emails will be sent to Cairo's guardians without delay.
